Mushing and ski joëring: animal power!…
Today's fun started with the vital need trappers and farmers had to move over the snow in the Far North and Scandinavia many centuries ago! Now in the Pays du Mont-Blanc dogs, horses and snow join forces for work and mushing and ski joëring pleasure!
When the Grande Odyssée, an incredible international husky team race, is run in the Pays du Mont-Blanc in January, the mountain holds its breath. And for a few days becomes a wild and romantic world again! Over the last few years, thanks to passionately committed enthusiasts, mushing has become a sport that fascinates people of every age. To walk behind a team of Greenlandic dogs or blue-eyed Huskies and learn to drive a team is a childhood dream inspired by Jack London's adventure novels shared by many. The Pays du Mont-Blanc and the Far North are only separated by a few time zones and trotting a team round the Lac des Chavants in Les Houches or across the plain of Notre Dame de la Gorge near Les Contamines takes you straight to the Great Outdoors! And it is a very pleasant après-ski activity too! Another animal and another story - the horse. Ski joëring started in Sweden in the distant past and has now joined the travelling party in the Pays du Mont-Blanc. Which just proves that there are many other ways to enjoy the snow apart from gliding and riding!
