Telemark: the ancestor of off-trail skiing
This skiing technique, probably the oldest in the world, is initially a state of mind. Fluidity, freedom and elegant gestures characterize this Norwegian style which has found an ideal and hospitable welcome in the Pays du Mont-Blanc.
"Free heels, free minds" is the motto of Telemarkers. This technique comes from the Norwegian province of Telemark and was invented and developed by farmer Sondre Norheim in the 19th century. Over the last twenty years, the slopes of the Mont-Blanc range have become used to these funny skiers who look like dancers. Some of them even attack the steepest and toughest slopes. In addition to being a state of mind, Telemark is a technique. The heels are not imprisoned in bindings and turns are made by taking great strides with the inside knee bent. The art of genuflexion! Telemark is focused in Les Houches where a group of fans built its success. So much so that four World Telemark Cups have already been held there. Today, Telemark has more and more adepts and you can rent or buy equipment in all the resorts. Although this art requires suppleness and strong thighs, it is true that after digesting the first lessons, glide fluidity is very pleasant. Telemark is a fun alternative to Alpine skiing. But watch out! Once you try it you're likely to become addicted!
