Torrents and lakes: water – the wellspring of leisure activities

It runs down from the glaciers and cliffs. The impetuous torrents and deep rivers are the arteries which feed the Pays du Mont-Blanc. Here, water is life - and so abundant that mountains literally irrigate our planet.

When you explore the Pays du Mont-Blanc, you will inevitably follow the tracks of this resource it is so essential to protect.

At every mountain altitude, water provides refreshing halts for the body and mind. At the very top, walking beside a stream of running water on a glacier is a completely surrealist experience.  These surface torrents carry melt waters which cut extraordinarily beautiful cavities into the ice. Lower down, the beautiful green glacier lakes invite hikers to rest. In the Pays du Mont-Blanc, all the high altitude lakes are popular excursion destinations. After a long walk, it is pure happiness to laze on the banks of these Alpine jewels. Water in the valleys is fast-moving and the lakes in the plain have become aquatic play-grounds which children love. All you have to do is choose. Torrents and rivers are welcomingly cool in summer and afford dynamic and open views. And remember when you switch on the light that water provides hydroelectric power for people and industry too!
